  - Jayden Phillips

  PART ONE

  Prologue

  Spring of 2002

  Houston, Texas

The summer heat coughed in thirteen-year-old Jayden Phillips’ face, as he burst through the doors of the school’s cafeteria. Air raced through the grooves of his cornrows and he bucked against the wind. Turning around momentarily, he could feel the anger steaming from the kids chasing him. They carried matches and they were ready to cause permanent damage. A quick count would end at ten and they all were gunning for him. Jayden fucked up royally and he knew it. He needed to catch wheels cuz if the mob caught him, he would be beat into a bloody pulp.

“You stole my money, boy! I’ma kick your ass when I catch you too!” Yelled Sandy, the prettiest and angriest of the bunch. Jayden wasn’t much on girls, but if he had to pick one his selection would be smooth. Sandy had it all. Beauty, big pretty eyes and most of all money. “I’ma put gum in your hair and burn it to your scalp!”

Thunderstorms kicked up inside of his chest with the news of her threat. If only he hadn’t crept into her purse spider-like, to steal the twenty-dollar bill that stuck out of the edge, none of this would’ve happened. It didn’t matter that he dropped the money some ways back. He reached into her shit, and for that she wanted to hear him cry. Before he stole it his decision made sense. He was broke, hungry and tired of not having money to wash his clothes and Sandy was so caked up he thought she wouldn’t miss it. He was dead wrong.

Jayden twisted in and out of the cars in the school’s parking lot, hoping to tire a few of them out. But five could go three more miles on pure hate alone. The worn out white Converse he wore offered little comfort when his feet struck the concrete. Pain shot up his backbone and he contemplated giving up and getting his beat down over with.

Things looked bleak until suddenly one of the kids fell face down like a domino, followed by another. A smile stretched over his face when through the crowd, he saw the brim of his brother’s black baseball cap. When it came to running not too many people could fuck with his twin. He was rebellious, a fighter and most of all he loved him. Once again, Madjesty saved the day.

When Madjesty caught up with him, Jayden noticed the grin on his face and the slyness in his eyes. He lived for this shit, Jayden was sure of it. “What you do this time, little brother?” He laughed, as he kept up with him on his quest. It was as if they possessed the same getaway plan because they switched from left to right simultaneously, neither having to update the other.

“Little brother? First of all, you was born only a few seconds before me.” He said out of breath. “And second, I didn’t do nothing,” he looked back at Sandy who’s pace seemed to simmer. A little. “You know how they be fucking with us at school sometimes. I ain’t about to hit no girl though.”

“Speak for yourself. If you put your hands on me, I’m breaking skin. Girl, boy or animal,” Madjesty said, mostly out of breath. “Go up there,” He pointed to a red brick dwelling with shattered windows, graffiti walls and trash in the yard. The fucked up thing was, people actually lived there. “In that building.”

Without hesitation they dodged into the property that was known to sell everything from pussy to ice cream. The moment they were inside, they looked out of the window on the door to see if their pursuers were still hot on their trail. The walls were gray and heaps of pink gum stuck to the floors like dried lumps of concrete.

Out of breath, Jayden was able to see Sandy and her friends look at the building and slowly back away. Angry or not, they knew better than to go inside the death trap. If the Phillip boys wanted to be stupid enough to risk their lives, that was on them. It didn’t take long for the horde to dissipate but Jayden knew he would see her pretty-angry face again.

“What was that shit about?” Madjesty asked, slapping him on the back as they flopped down on a step. His black jeans were so tight they would’ve been skin
ny jeans if it were the right era. The hallway was dank and smelled of hot compost but neither seemed to notice. “They not gonna be after you like that for nothing.” Madjesty controlled the dirty white laces on one of his shoes, by taming them into a bow.

“She got mad because I asked for her friend’s number. I think she like me or something.” To cool down, Jayden pulled a few times on his white T-Shirt with the permanent yellow stains in the pit area. He stood up and walked toward the door again while brushing off the back of his already dingy jeans. “But, I ain’t worried ‘bout it though.”

“I don’t believe you.” Madjesty stated. “I mean, I don’t believe you like girls.”

Jayden’s face-hardened and he wasn’t sure why he lied about snatching her money. Part of him considered how the world viewed thieves. Sure they’d stolen from the store at times in an effort to survive. That type of thing was commonplace but they never stole from someone they knew. There were rules with that shit.

“I don’t know why you think I’m lying. You know how them bitches be at school.” He wiped the sweat off of his forehead. “They all freaks.”

Madjesty eyes seemed to brighten with his response. “So you really like girls now?” He smiled and leaned his upper body against the wall. “Because you never fuck with bitches at our school. Every time we talk about them you always saying how nasty they are and shit like that.”

A lady walked out of her apartment and Jayden, always the gentleman, rushed to open the door. “I like girls, Madjesty. I might not kiss ‘em and stuff like that, but I like ‘em.” His lies tasted like dirty pennies in his mouth. He didn’t like girls and he couldn’t explain why. When he was next to them his body said it was wrong and he couldn’t make it right. “If I get with somebody, I gotta like her a lot but you don’t care who you go with.” He swallowed air to allow his mind a chance to pause.

He hated how Madjesty bombarded him with questions like, ‘Is this girl pretty’ or ‘that girl cute.’ Jayden was only interested in what they could do for him. What they could give him.

“Jayden, I think you gonna turn out to be gay.” He kicked a roach out of his path, which was threatening to fuck his shoe. “That’s why ma be keeping a close eye on you.”

“I don’t like how ya’ll be talking about me behind my back sometimes.” He leaned on the door. “You supposed to be my brother, Madjesty, not ma’s. Plus you don’t even fuck with her like that and she don’t fuck with you. She be telling people all the time how she only got one son, and you know which one she chooses,” he points to himself, “me.”

Madjesty pushed the hurt down into the pit of his stomach, where he kept the rest of his disappointments. “You telling me something I already know. I don’t fuck with that bitch now and never will.” He pulled his cap further over his eyes. He loved her deep down inside and felt weak for it. “You the one who always making her out to be more than what she is. I had one conversation with her recently and that was the night she got up complaining about niggas stealing her dirty panties.”

Jayden frowned. “What that got to do with me?”

“Nothing, I just wanted you to know where my loyalty lies. I wish I can say the same about you.”

“My loyalty lies with you, Madjesty. You know that.” He paused. “I just want the three of us to be family. Without stabbing each other in the back. Don’t you?”

Madjesty stood up, removed the cap off of his head and wiped his damp face. Their musty odor contributed to the rancid smell of the hallway. “Don’t play with me like that, Jayden.” He hit him softly on the shoulder. “………. don’t you?” He put his cap back on.

Jayden tilted his head. His hearing failed him again. “What you say?”

“How come you act like you can’t hear sometimes? Just keep it real and say you don’t feel like listening.”

“I’m not ignoring you.” Jayden tugged at his right ear and seemed to go elsewhere in his mind. “Madjesty, have you ever done it with a girl before?” He focused on his lips.

“Uh…yeah…I fucked lots of girls before.” He lied.

  “I’m serious.”

“It don’t matter if I fucked girls or not, I kissed a rack of ‘em.”

Jayden didn’t understand sex nor did he care as much as his mother or his brother seemed to. He was all about having money to eat, wear clean clothes and having a place to live.

“Anyway, where were you at lunch time?” Jayden inquired.

Madjesty’s grin got larger. “Remember the girl Rocket I was telling you about? We were kicking it in the girl’s bathroom.”

“What ya’ll talking about in there? You coulda got in trouble if a teacher caught you.”

“You scary as shit. We were talking about the field trip. She was asking me if I was going and stuff like that.” Jayden thought about how badly he wanted to go but knew it wouldn’t be possible. “I think she was gonna let me kiss her if I asked.” He paused. “She kept saying, ‘get out of here boy! You gonna get me in trouble.’ But Jayden, I think she wanted me in there.” He grinned at the thought. “You should see the way she be talking to me all close and shit. I’ma make her mine, watch.”

“Like you did Tisa? Right before she dumped you for the boy who kept hitting you in the back of the head with the encyclopedia?” Jayden combatted. “The girl didn’t want nothing to do with you, Madjesty, and Rocket probably don’t either. Anyway don’t she go with the boy Baisley? Who play football?”

Before he could respond, a door opened upstairs. Three male teenagers appeared from an apartment, leaving the door ajar. They wore expressions of satisfaction and for some reason they grabbed Jayden’s attention. He watched them jog down the steps two at a time as they moved toward the exit.

“Man, that shit was wild!” The shortest of them said. “Can you believe she in there getting it in like that?”

“Believe it,” the other said groping his dick, “nigga, I was there!” He gave him dap.

They laughed as they swooshed past the twins before disappearing outside. Curious, Jayden approached the opened door. The incident called him and he pushed forward. Madjesty was right behind him.

Inside the unknown apartment, the first thing he smelled was smoke and unclean sex. The air was also thick and for some reason, Jayden felt at home. He approached a sofa and it all made sense when he saw the back of a woman’s neck. Her hair was swept to the right and her head hung frontwards without support. On the floor were empty beer bottles and used condoms filled with creamy froth. Slowly Jayden walked around the front of the couch and his heart sank when he saw her face. It was his mother, Harmony Phillips.

Things got worse when Jayden felt another presence in the room. By the time he stared into the murderous gaze of a man, the eyes of his double barrel shotgun was pointed in Jayden’s direction.

  RUN DOWN SOUL

Jayden and Madjesty were enveloped in partial darkness. Mama didn’t pay the light bill yet again. This type of shit wrecked Jayden’s mind. Why couldn’t she do the basics to see that they were safe? Jayden sat in a plastic yellow chair, across from his mother’s inebriated, half naked body. A candle’s radiance spotlighted the thick vomit in the corners of her mouth and the stern expression on her sleeping face. She looked a fucking mess. She was so wretched death didn’t want her.

Jayden placed his hand on her warm thigh, hoping that like in the past, she’d bounce back and come through the episode alive. Even a hopeless drunk, a worthless mother and a monster, deserved love. Didn’t she?

“I don’t know why you bother with that bitch.” Madjesty declaimed, as he leaned against the dirty wall of their apartment. The candle beside him threatened to burn out for good. His arms were crossed tightly against his body like a lunatic wearing a straight jacket in an insane asylum. “Just let her kill herself so we can finally be free.” He tugged at his baseball cap, masking the pain in his eyes. He was tired of his mother fucking with his mind. Playing games with his heart. If she wasn’t going to take care of t
hem, DIE ALREADY was his chant. “At least she can’t hurt….”

Jayden couldn’t hear him clearly so he tugged his right ear, held his head down and eyed the wooden slats on the floor. He could see his boyish reflection in them, which he loathed. “She’s our mother, Madjesty. We only get one.” He inspected his twin’s eyes, the only person on earth who accompanied him in her diseased womb. “She gonna stay sick if she don’t have our love.” He sipped the flat orange soda that sat on the table. When he was done, he placed it back next to the permission slip for the field trip, which Harmony constantly ignored like everything else. He knew he wasn’t going. How could he? She didn’t even pay the light bill.

Madjesty pushed his body off the wall and stomped toward him. “Did you just say love?” His eyes formed tiny slits as he pointed at Harmony’s limp body. “What the fuck this bitch ever teach us ‘bout love? Huh?” He stood over Jayden demanding answers. The wrong response might make him snap and he knew it. “I’m the only one who loves you, Jay. Not this whore faking like…”

Jayden didn’t catch the entire sentence, but he heard enough. “Don’t put me in a position where I gotta choose you over her, Madjesty. Because I would never do that to you.”

His voice lowered. “And I would never do that to you either. Unlike her, I love you.” He traipsed back to the wall and slid to the floor. “It’s just me and you against the world. Plus she will never be who you need her to be. Ever. And one day when you need her the most, she’ll let you down. I put my life on it. I just hope it won’t be too late.”

Jayden was still looking at him when Harmony stirred. It took a few seconds for her to open her red eyes. When she saw her twins examining her, she placed her hand over her face to cover her shame. “What ya’ll doing now, talking about all the things I did wrong again?” She laughed at her own joke. “If you are, save your fucking breath, I already know.”
